Garage Fire Transitional Fire Attack Training Video

This is recently released training video outlining some of the Flow Path Management techniques. Watch as crews from the Southern Pines Fire Department burn a house and attached garage.     I don't necessarily agree that the stream tactics here were a true transitional attack. From all I have read and viewed, the stream is to be a straight or solid stream directed at a steep angle to the ceiling area of the fire room and not moved to allow venting back out the same window or door. When the fire is knocked back a rapid follow up interior attack line is supposed to be stretched in to kill the fire.

  • Concur – the straight stream is fundamentally about creating favorable conditions for transitioning to an interior attack (if needed). To be fair, one could say that if the video and tactic had continued, such conditions were created…

    I agree with the above comments. I would further that by saying just because you sprayed water through a window does not make that transitional either. The subtitle “no fire has extended past the garage” is inaccurate. Although there is no visible fire from the outside, you can see that there is a large quantity of heat still being produced and exiting the vent home in the roof past the garage. This is heat unimpinged by the attack stream as there is no steam exiting the vent hole. Also, flow path management appears to be inaccurate as well since there did not appear to be any glass intact on the alpha side of the building. As the attack stream hit superheated gasses and turned to steam, it vented from every window visible. One could argue that in a situation such as a garage fire, it would be hugely beneficial to open the garage door with saws to allow the rapidly expanding fire gasses and even more rapidly expanding steam to exit the fire building instead of being forced into the structure potentially causing devestating steam burns to a victim who may be on the back side of the man door between the kitchen and the garage.

    • Thank you for your comments folks but let me first address this was the burn down of a 2-story residence training fire and the challenge was to see if attacking a heavily involved garage fire via the windows was plausible without subjecting an forcible entry crew to forcing entry to thermal insult. The intention was to see if the fire could be knocked back or “reset” to permit the entry crew to perform their functions without fire rolling over their heads. In addition, how long would the rest attack last once knocked back, So, yes..windows failed during previous runs on the house…yes a vent hole was provided as per NFPA 1403…
      furthermore, a thorough understanding of thermal ballast should be researched to fully understand more ventilation openings can be a negative factor by allowing steam to escape (inert molecules) and permitting an influx of air to regain control of the fire room. The intent is to convert a flammable atmosphere into a non-flammable atmosphere via the introduction of inert molecules. As steam or thermal ballast escapes (just like fire gas molecules) it allows for the influx of air.

      Finally, your comments about a entry crew are correct, but the fuel used was furniture and pallets so, therefore, per NFPA 1403 no interior fire attack is to be made. That is why you do not see anyone entering the structure following the knockdown.

      So in summary….no matter the angle of the stream or placement of the hoseline, material burning are 6-dimensional, the objective is to get water onto the source of the fire, (surface cooling) otherwise you are simply cooling gases. (Gas cooling) until you get water on the source the objective is not met. This requires the nozzle to be manipulated up, down, side to side and at various positions in order to reach the source. U.L. & NIST recommend directing the solid stream upwards..this is not always the case my experience has not demonstrated putting the stream in the upper portions as recommended by NIST is effective in all situations. A moving nozzle is a happy nozzle. Move the nozzle until you see a transition to steam.
